YOUNG DESIGNER INTERVIEW

Rachel

By Montgomery Harris

Rachel showing her quick and easy skirt she made for one of our "How to" videos during a Project RUNWAY camp. She hand-painted the flower you see at the bottom of the skirt.
Rachel, age fourteen, has been sewing at Love to Sew for four years. In addition to fashion design, Rachel is a student of various art forms and likes to work with graphite, oil pastels, as well as silk painting. She has participated in the Project Runway camps since the first summer she began sewing and has won the International Challenge (2010), and the Rags to Riches Challenge (2007), among others.

What inspires your designs?
My own personal style, which I would describe as an understated, fun, and young look.

What do you like best and least about sewing?
Best is the finished product, as well as creating something of my own, original, changing things as I go. I find sewing pretty fun and relaxing, but I guess if there’s a lot of tedious, repetitive work that feels less creative, I would say I like that aspect least.

How do you incorporate your talent in other art forms into your designs?
I start out with sketching. Drawing is a hobby of mine and I guess that informs my work. I’ve also used fabric paint in my designs.

One of your favorite novels has just been turned into a screen play. You have been asked to costume design for the film. What production is this? Describe one outfit for the film.
I don’t have a specific book, but something like The Chronicles of Narnia, where there’s fantasy and mythical creatures, but also includes modern wear. I like the variety. The White Witch’s costume would be amazing to work on.

What is your least favorite fashion faux pas?
The boyfriend jeans. Super, super big, baggy pants, they’re not my favorite on girls or guys. The fit doesn’t work.
